Symposium: Improv in Therapy

For the first time, the improv-theatre »Die Gorillas« is holding an international symposium on the topic »Improv in Therapy«. In lectures and workshops with Dr. Assael Romanelli, Dipl.-Psych. Dörte Foertsch, Randy Dixon and the Gorillas Barbara Klehr und Regina Fabian the symposium will show how methods of improvisation can be used in therapy and therapeutic training.
With the discussion forums on Sunday we want to initiate a continuous international exchange about existing offers, projects and studies. We also want to provide a forum for new ideas that develop the connection between impro in therapy.

The symposium is adressed to professional therapists, with and without experience in improv theatre.
All lectures and workshops are in English and/or German.

Workshop 2 - Rubbing the lamp: Activating Image Through Improv

Randy Dixon: Rubbing the lamp – Activating Image Through Improv
Randy Dixon, Seattle, USA

At the heart of the matter, we are storytellers. Almost everything we take in, and offer to others is in story form. We tell ourselves inner stories that help us cope, survive and recover from our encounters with the world. There is a great deal of knowledge, insight, and wisdom contained in these images. The tools of improvisation can be used to unlock inner meanings, revelations, and details contained in the images from the stories we tell others and ourselves. We will explore through activities and learn through dialogue what lies within them. There is a genie inside our stories and images wanting to get out of the bottle. Let’s rub the lamp together and see how our wishes are granted.

One year of improv experience necessary to participate.

Workshop 3 - Just do it! Spontaneity and Making Experiences, Improv in therapy

Barbara Klehr & Regina Fabian: Just do it! Spontaneity and Making Experiences, Improv in therapy
Barbara Klehr & Regina Fabian, Berlin, Germany
This workshop is aimed at all those therapists, who have not yet experienced improvisation. The workshop will introduce bacis tools and techniques, that are used in improv theatre. The basic principle of »Yes,and...« can be practised in several playful situations. We will show exercises that support an attitude of acceptance and appreciation, while also expanding your own ability to make associations. The focus is on reacting to the moment. Trusting our ideas is an important ground for improvisation. We will train our attentiveness for our associations (in movement, sound and words, in the concrete and the abstract) and use it in our encounters. Being able to react spontaneously also means being able to let go of your own ideas in a flexible way.
